Blepharoplasty

About the procedure

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure on the eyelids that helps remove excess skin, fatty “bags” under the eyes, and create a more open and refreshed appearance. With age, the skin around the eyes becomes thinner and less elastic. The upper eyelids may begin to droop, the contour of the lower eyelids may change, and puffiness or dark circles may develop. As a result, even when you feel well, your face may look tired or older.

Blepharoplasty addresses the underlying causes of these changes rather than simply masking them. During the procedure, the surgeon removes excess tissue and restores a more defined eyelid contour while preserving the natural appearance of the eyes. It does not change your facial features, but rather makes them look more defined.

The procedure can be performed on its own or combined with other facial correction procedures if a more comprehensive result is desired.

When is blepharoplasty recommended?

  • Blepharoplasty may be recommended when there is drooping of the upper eyelid, which can sometimes partially obstruct the field of vision or create a feeling of heaviness. This often becomes noticeable when the skin fold becomes more pronounced and makeup no longer looks the way it used to.
  • The procedure may also be suitable for persistent “bags” under the eyes that do not disappear with rest and are not caused solely by swelling. They may result from fatty deposits or tissue changes that cannot be corrected with creams or non-invasive procedures.
  • Blepharoplasty may also be appropriate for younger patients who have a genetic predisposition to these features, such as pronounced under-eye bags or drooping eyelids.

It is an option for those who want a long-lasting result and have not achieved the desired effect from non-invasive methods.

Why is it important?

The area around the eyes is one of the first areas where signs of aging appear, and it has a significant impact on the overall appearance of the face. Even minor changes in this area can make the face look fresher or, conversely, more tired.

Blepharoplasty can help eliminate these factors and restore a more open, refreshed appearance. It is not about changing your appearance, but about rejuvenating it.

In addition to its aesthetic benefits, the procedure may also have a functional purpose in some cases, for example, when drooping eyelids affect vision or cause discomfort.

Many patients report that after surgery they look as though they have had a good rest, which can contribute to greater self-confidence.

How is the procedure performed?

  • Blepharoplasty is performed under local anesthesia or with sedation, and in some cases under general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure.
  • For upper eyelid correction, the incision is made in the natural crease of the eyelid, making the scar virtually invisible after healing. The surgeon removes excess skin and, if necessary, adjusts fatty tissue.
  • For lower blepharoplasty, the incision may be made just below the eyelashes or on the inner surface of the eyelid. This allows the surgeon to remove under-eye bags and improve the contour.
  • The procedure usually takes one to two hours. Swelling, bruising, and a feeling of tightness may occur after surgery and gradually subside.
  • The final result develops over several weeks as the tissues fully recover.

Patient preparation

Preparation begins with a consultation during which the doctor evaluates the condition of the skin and tissues and discusses your expectations. This is important for determining the appropriate extent of correction.

Before surgery, standard tests are performed to ensure there are no contraindications. It is also important to inform the doctor about any medical conditions and medications you are taking.

Several days before the procedure, it is recommended to avoid alcohol, smoking, and medications that affect blood clotting, if this has been agreed with your doctor.

On the day of surgery, you should be feeling well. After the procedure, you should follow the doctor’s recommendations: avoid excessive eye strain, do not rub the eyelids, maintain proper hygiene, and attend follow-up appointments.

This helps ensure proper healing and achieve the most natural and stable result.
