Mammoplasty

Mammoplasty
About the Procedure
Mammoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape the breasts, allowing their size, shape, or proportions to be adjusted according to the body’s anatomy and the patient’s desired outcome. This includes breast augmentation using implants or the patient’s own fat, as well as breast reduction or reshaping in cases of asymmetry or disproportion. Modern mammoplasty is not about making the breasts larger at any cost, but about achieving harmony, natural-looking results, and proportions that complement the body.
With age, after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or changes in weight, the breasts may change shape, lose volume, or become less firm. In some cases, breast size or asymmetry is a congenital characteristic. Mammoplasty can address these concerns while preserving a natural appearance and feel.
The essence of the procedure is to create a new breast shape that looks harmonious and suits your body, rather than simply changing its size.
When Is Mammoplasty Recommended?
Mammoplasty may be considered when a patient is dissatisfied with the shape or size of the breasts and this affects comfort or self-confidence. This most commonly includes insufficient breast volume when a more defined shape is desired, or excessive breast size that causes physical discomfort.
The procedure may also be appropriate for breast asymmetry, when one breast differs from the other, or after changes associated with pregnancy and breastfeeding when the breast shape does not return to its previous state.
Mammoplasty may also be considered after significant weight loss, when breast volume decreases and the skin loses its firmness. In such cases, augmentation may sometimes be combined with a breast lift.
The decision to undergo surgery is made individually, taking into account the patient’s anatomy, lifestyle, and expectations.
Why It Matters
Breast shape and size can significantly affect how a person perceives their body and their self-confidence. When the breasts do not correspond to a person’s preferences, this may cause discomfort, limitations in clothing choices, and general dissatisfaction with their appearance.
Mammoplasty can help create a breast shape that looks natural and harmonious. It is not about achieving an abstract ideal, but about achieving a result that feels right for you.
In the case of breast reduction, the procedure may also have physical benefits, including reducing strain on the back and neck and making movement and everyday activities more comfortable.
Modern techniques can provide highly natural-looking results while taking individual anatomical characteristics into account.
How the Procedure Is Performed
- Mammoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. Before surgery, the doctor carefully plans the shape, size, and surgical technique based on the patient’s body proportions and preferences.
- For breast augmentation, implants are placed either beneath the breast tissue or under the muscle. Another option is using the patient’s own fat when a more subtle increase in volume is desired.
- For breast reduction or reshaping, the surgeon removes excess tissue, creates a new breast contour, and, when necessary, changes the position of the nipple-areola complex.
- The surgery usually takes several hours. Swelling, bruising, and a feeling of tightness may occur after the procedure and are normal parts of the recovery process.
After surgery, special compression garments should be worn to support the tissues and help the breasts settle into their new shape.
Patient Preparation
Preparation begins with a consultation during which the doctor evaluates the breast shape and tissue condition and discusses the desired outcome. This is important to ensure that expectations are realistic and achievable with the procedure.
Before surgery, standard laboratory tests are performed, and additional examinations such as ultrasound or mammography may be recommended when appropriate.
Several days before the procedure, patients are generally advised to avoid alcohol and smoking and to stop medications that affect blood clotting only if this has been agreed with their doctor.
On the day of surgery, it is important to be in normal health. After the procedure, patients should follow the doctor’s recommendations, including wearing compression garments, limiting physical activity, and attending regular follow-up appointments.
This helps support proper healing and achieve a high-quality, natural-looking, and long-lasting result.
