Ultrasound for Children

What Is Ultrasound?

Ultrasound (or ultrasound examination) is a non-invasive diagnostic method that uses sound waves to obtain information about the condition of internal organs.

The method is completely safe for newborns, infants, children, and adolescents. It does not use radiation and does not require anesthesia. Ultrasound is particularly important in children for the early diagnosis of congenital abnormalities, monitoring organ development, and assessing the condition after illnesses or injuries.

Preparation for Ultrasound

Preparation depends on the type of examination.

  • For abdominal ultrasound, it is generally necessary to avoid eating for 3–4 hours before the procedure. For infants, this should be discussed with the doctor
  • For pelvic ultrasound, the bladder needs to be full, so the child should drink water 30–60 minutes before the examination
  • If a heart, thyroid, or vascular ultrasound is planned, no special preparation is usually required. It is only advisable to limit the child’s physical activity beforehand to avoid excessive muscle and organ tension

During the examination, the child may stay in the parent’s arms or in a comfortable position next to them to avoid unnecessary stress.
