Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that allows the shape, size, or position of the ears to be corrected so that they look more natural and harmonious in relation to the face. Most often, this involves correcting so-called “protruding ears,” when the ears extend too far from the head or have a pronounced angle. Otoplasty may also include reshaping the ear, correcting asymmetry, or restoring its appearance after an injury.

This procedure does not change the facial features, but it can significantly affect the overall appearance. The ears are a feature that often attracts attention, and even a minor correction can make the face look more balanced.

It is important that otoplasty is aimed at achieving a natural-looking result. The doctor does not “redesign” the ears, but rather corrects their shape so that they look as natural as possible and do not attract unnecessary attention.

When is it recommended?

• Otoplasty may be recommended when the shape or position of the ears causes discomfort, both physical and psychological. Most often, this concerns protruding ears, which may be noticeable from childhood.

How is the procedure performed?

• Otoplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia, sometimes with additional sedation to help the patient feel comfortable. In some cases, especially in children, general anesthesia may be used.
• During the surgery, the doctor works with the ear cartilage, changing its shape or position or securing it in a more appropriate position. The incisions are usually made behind the ear, so after healing they are virtually invisible.
• The procedure usually takes about one to two hours. The patient can generally return home on the same day.
• During the first few days after surgery, swelling, mild discomfort, or a feeling of tightness may occur. It is also usually recommended to wear a special dressing or supportive headband to maintain the result.

Patient preparation

• Preparation for otoplasty begins with a consultation during which the doctor evaluates the shape of the ears, discusses expectations, and explains what result can be achieved.
• Basic tests may be recommended before the procedure to ensure there are no contraindications. It is also important to inform the doctor about all medical conditions and medications you are taking.
