Newborn Care

At MIRUM Clinic, newborn care includes monitoring the child’s growth and development, routine vaccination, examinations by specialists, and home visits by a doctor.

When Is the Initial Newborn Check-Up Needed?

Many new parents naturally wonder when their newborn should have their first check-up. The answer is simple: the first newborn check-up should take place immediately after discharge from the maternity hospital. It is very important that the first newborn check-up is performed in the comfort of the child’s home environment. Subsequent newborn check-ups can be carried out at the clinic.

The Second Newborn Check-Up

A follow-up newborn check-up is recommended two weeks after the first one. The second newborn check-up should take place toward the end of the child’s first month of life. The final newborn care schedule is usually determined by the pediatrician chosen by the parents.

The Third Newborn Check-Up

The third newborn check-up is usually carried out toward the end of the third week of the child’s life, but it may be adjusted according to an individualized schedule. In this case, the newborn check-up may be performed by a nurse.

Newborn Care at MIRUM Clinic

Medical newborn care is needed from the first month of life and monthly until the child reaches 3 years of age. According to Order No. 149 of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the number of examinations of a child under 3 years of age should not be fewer than 13. However, since every child is different, newborn and infant care can be provided according to an individualized schedule. The schedule can be developed by the pediatrician together with the parents.

If problems arise, more frequent check-ups may be required. Parents should consult a doctor if the baby experiences frequent spit-up, skin rashes, diarrhea or constipation, or poor weight gain.

Newborn jaundice can also develop quite often after discharge from the maternity hospital. This is physiological jaundice, which, when bilirubin levels are elevated, is treated with phototherapy sessions, using light from a specialized lamp.

Newborn Care Schedule at MIRUM Clinic

Newborn care is very important because it allows healthcare professionals to monitor the child’s health during the first years of life, identify abnormalities in a timely manner, correct them, and provide timely treatment. Pediatricians at MIRUM Clinic will be happy to develop an individualized visit schedule for each child.

What Does Newborn Care Include?

Newborn care is an essential part of early childhood healthcare. It can be provided either at home or in the doctor’s office during a clinic visit.

A pediatrician’s appointment includes:

  • General examination of the child
  • Measuring weight and height
  • Measuring head circumference, chest circumference, and fontanelle
  • Assessment of psychomotor development
  • Examination of the umbilical wound and skin
  • Vaccination recommendations
  • Recommendations for parents

If the doctor has any concerns during the examination, the child may be referred to a specialist.

What Does First-Year Child Monitoring Include?

Newborn and infant care during the first year of life is provided according to a schedule. It may include consultations with the following specialists:

  • Orthopedist. A visit is recommended by 3 months of age. This can help identify musculoskeletal disorders at an early stage, including hip dysplasia, rickets, torticollis, and other conditions. An ultrasound examination of the hip joints may be recommended.
  • Neurologist. An examination is recommended by 2 months of age. This allows the doctor to assess the baby’s neurological status and identify potential problems, such as newborn tremor.
  • Ophthalmologist. It is advisable to visit this specialist when the baby reaches 3 months of age.
  • Otolaryngologist (ENT). A visit is recommended during the first months of life. The earlier potential problems are identified, the better.
  • Surgeon. An examination is recommended by 3 months of age. This can help identify and prevent complications such as inguinal hernia and cryptorchidism in boys.

In addition, a newborn care nurse who visits the child according to the schedule may recommend seeing a doctor for laboratory tests (blood and urine) or additional examinations, including ultrasound, ECG, echocardiography, cardiac Doppler ultrasound, EEG, and neurosonography.

When Is a Pediatrician’s Consultation Needed?

Any changes in the health or behavior of a newborn are a reason to consult a pediatrician. In addition, immediate medical attention is required if the following conditions occur:

  • High fever and seizures
  • Appearance of a rash
  • Altered consciousness
  • Head or body injuries
  • Burns
  • Allergic reactions of various types
  • Vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation
  • Headache in the child
  • Prolonged crying without an apparent cause
  • Bluish discoloration of the area around the mouth, nails, skin, or tongue
  • Dehydration
  • Bleeding
  • Swallowing foreign objects or foreign objects entering the airways

Any unusual condition in a child requires consultation with a pediatrician.
