Computed tomography (CT) is a modern radiological diagnostic method that provides cross-sectional and three-dimensional images of internal organs and systems. The examination is performed quickly, with minimal radiation exposure and high diagnostic accuracy.

CT vs MRI: What Is the Difference?

CT is best suited for rapid examination of bones, lungs, and organs of the chest. It helps detect fractures, injuries, inflammation, tumors, or bleeding, especially in emergency situations.

MRI, on the other hand, is used to examine the brain, nervous system, soft tissues, ligaments, and joints. This method provides detailed images of sports injuries and changes in internal organs, such as the liver, kidneys, or pelvic organs.

CT provides better visualization of structures that are difficult to assess with MRI, including bones, lungs, internal bleeding, and calcium deposits.

The diagnostic method is selected individually, taking into account your condition and the specialist’s recommendations.

Are There Any Restrictions, and How Is Safety Ensured?

Modern CT scanners provide minimal radiation exposure, making the examination safe for most patients. At the same time, CT is recommended only when medically indicated in order to avoid unnecessary radiation exposure.

Contraindications to CT include:

pregnancy
severe kidney failure, for examinations with contrast
allergy to contrast media

How Should I Prepare?

In most cases, no special preparation is required. You can simply come for the examination at a convenient time.

If the examination is performed with contrast, there are several important considerations:

do not eat for 3–4 hours before the procedure
be sure to inform your doctor if you have allergies, kidney problems, or diabetes
your doctor may recommend a blood test for creatinine or eGFR to assess kidney function
